This is a fantastic point of view–I agree with the abundance of eating vegan, my son is vegan and we are having a fine time exploring some of the tastes Julia is suggesting. Thanks for a terrific article!

  5. Eve Nasetti says:

Fabulous and so true! Your body has thanked you by shedding the extra weight and will continue to thank you by maintaining better health! Can’t wait to read the next entry!

  6. Wow – great to find out about The Alternative Food Co-op in Wakefield – my husband and I will have to check it out soon – and try your recipe for veggie burgers. Thanks!

Sydney, it was such a lovely afternoon. Thank you, thank you for providing the inspiration and warmth of your home. xo Gary

    • mothering Mother says:

Lisa, good luck with the cake! It is super easy and super tasty (well that is my experience). Let me know how it goes. Shanthi

  8. Kristin says:

Thanks Anna for sharing! I congratulate you on diving in, very often we find something to delay what we know in our minds to be the right thing to do! The kale salad looks amazing!

    • Anna says:

Kristin. I totally agree. Though I couldn’t actually dive in, I keep moving forward, inch by inch till I am completely submerged. I feel like I’m moving in the right direction. Thanks for following and engaging. And the kale mint salad is amazing and surprisingly hearty. It comes for a great website called http://www.Food52.com. Hope to keep in touch

  9. lisa says:

hi anna! i know where you are coming from. i myself made the leap into living a whole foods plant based vegan diet over 7 years ago and i am raising my 4 year old son vegan. he has never eaten any animal products and he has been to the farm sanctuaries to meet the cows and pigs and horses and sheep so he knows exactly why he is vegan.

i taught myself to cook vegan and now i even have a blog! you can find many family friendly easy to make recipes at lisa’s project: vegan (lisasprojectvegan.com)

think pesto, baked tofu, tempeh, beans, cakes, cookies, salads, gravy, thanksgiving, passover, etc, etc!

you can also read “my vegan story” here: http://lisasprojectvegan.com/2013/08/30/my-vegan-story-in-chickpea-magazine/

good luck on your journey and be in touch!

    • Anna says:

Lisa: Your website and blog are amazing. I perused it last night and discovered Isa and the vegan mac and cheese. I’ve been experimenting with various versions of M&C, and yet to find one that satisfies the whole gang. This one is on my list to try next.

  10. Chris says:

I’m trying this tonight! Thanks for sharing your experience in such an honest and low-pressure way. We’ve also taken our eating to the “green side”, but I’ve found myself slipping recently back into poor habits. Instead of being disappointed, I realize I should just try to remember how much better my body and mind feel after being on track with healthier eating. Thanks for reminding me of this 🙂

    • Anna says:

      Chris:
Thanks for your comment. I am with you 100%…Best not to get down on ones’ self for slipping back. I try to use each meal or situtation an opportunity to choose a healthy option rather than holding myself to a strict standard across the board. It seems more manageable and I find I am more successful that way. It is amazing how much better and and lighter I feel while also being compassionate with myself.

  11. mandy macrae says:

Great start, keep it going, pure food is so much more satisfying and healthy for all!1

  12. Anna says:

Thanks Mandy for your encouragement. One meal at a time…

  13. andrea says:

Hi Sydney.. In this time of THANKSGIVING, thought i’d let you know how much i benefit and enjoy MMNN! Wish i could upload the photo i took of the Pecan Pumpkin Cranberry Loaf! I doubled the recipe, which i followed pretty much to the word (minus nutmeg, which i’m allergic to) Shared it with folks at the “Reskilling our Waterways” conference up in New Paltz, hosted by the Mid-Atlantic Transition Hub.. It was savored by many, and was a tremendous hit at that.. so thanks for that, and also the tips on “hair cleansers”. i grew up with a splash of vinegar as rinse (my mom was “from the old country”) but the baking soda is a new one on me.. Thanks again, Sydney, and know you have grateful followers… ~ andrea

    • mothering Mother says:

Andrea, thanks for the feedback on the mothering Mother Newsletter (MMNN) and the pumpkin loaf! Thanks for sharing the food, and your work for the waterways! Many THANKS to you. Enjoy the holiday season!

      Peace

  14. Hugh says:

Ok, so I basically followed this recipe, but I substituted blackberries for strawberries, and I can certify that this is truly idiot-proof. The whole endeavor, including sourcing mason jars and organic sugar, picking the blackberries, making it, labeling the jars, was one afternoon. For the attention span-challenged, this is a Good Thing. Batch 1 was exactly as above. Batch 2 involved bourbon and vanilla. This became known as Drunken Blackberry. Batch 3 had added italian basil (thank you NY Times). Thank you, thank you, thank you for the inspiration and the how to, Syd!!!!

    • mothering Mother says:

Oh, thanks for your jamming notes and variations Hugh! This is giving me inspiration for the next jamming season, and the idea of making exotic jams!

      Peace

  15. Really nice post! Made me smile. I applaud both Anna and Mothering Mother. Seems like a good idea, but I’d have to change some habits first… and we all know that’s not easy.

    • Anna says:

Thank you for keeping up with us Cathie. I agree it is hard to break habits. But if I just set my awareness there and take baby steps it comes little by little. IT is easier than you might imagine. Important thing is not to pass judgment.

  16. lisa says:

how did you like theppk’s vegan mac ‘n cheese? i love isa’s recipes! her new cookbook is amazing. check out my review!

  17. Katharine says:

Great stuff Anna! Inspiring for sure. I especially love the part about the kids getting a bowl of cereal or making themselves a grilled cheese sandwich!

  18. lisa says:

love this! you don’t have to label yourself – that just creates a fake separation anyway. you are doing your part and you are an inspiration!

  19. Anna says:

It was good if you ate it immediately. Once it sat for a little while, it became gloomy and sandy. Still in search of perfect mac and cheese. WIll try the other recipe you shared on FB.

  20. mothering Mother says:

So beautiful Sydney. Thanks for sharing

  21. Laurie says:

Beautiful family picture, and beautiful sentiment, along with the journey towards it.

    • mothering Mother says:

Laurie, the camera has been worth the investment. One of the boys noted that people look better in the pictures than they do in real life! I’ll take it!!!
We all experience sentiments during the holiday season, sharing with others ignites the value and power of them.

  22. Lisa Dawn says:

sounds like the perfect meal for me!

  23. Patrick says:

We absolutely love this recipe! We’ve made it many times and always make extras – it keeps so well as a leftover!

    • mothering Mother says:

Pat, you have discovered the secret. I sometimes think that leftover legumes have even more flavor, as the spices settle right now. Thanks for sharing your experience and tips. Happy warm dinner to you!

  24. Liz says:

These cookies are amazing! I look forward to testing them on my family.

    • mothering Mother says:

Keep us posted on your family’s cookie testingLiz! These cookies seem to melt in the mouth, and disappear from the cookie tin way too quickly! Peace

  25. Ashley says:

Great post, Sydney! Restaurants could also do a better job at using less packaging and not adding condiments and plates to every package unless the customer asks. Thanks again.

    • mothering Mother says:

Yes, and hopefully the styrofoam ban will help to highlight this to all of us. Thanks for pointing this out.

      Peace & Green

  26. Just made these, YUM!!! They might have been not-so-great– Had to sub out whole wheat pastry flour, for whole wheat flour (the hazards of husband doing grocery shopping). Only had old fashioned oats, and subbed dried cranberries for raisons.
    STILL DELICIOUS!!!

  27. Cathie says:

    Lovely. Relatable. Open.

  28. Nancy Lustgarten Wessel says:

Loved this. I remember the first time, in 1990 something, I saw someone put salad into a blender. I thought she was out of her mind! All you trend setters are very brave.

  29. Claire says:

    These look amazing, Syd!!
